Lying Eyes (Nights at Mata Hari Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 127 ratings

Protector. Bartender. Art Collector. Leatherman. Muscle Daddy.
Randy Vaughan is a six-foot-three mass of mysteries to his customers and his friends. Why does a former Secret Service agent now own Mata Hari, a successful piano bar? Where did he get his passion for collecting fine art? Why does he crave weekly sessions at an exclusive leather club?
Randy’s carefully private life unravels when Jack Fraser, a handsome art historian from England, walks into his bar, anxious to get his hands on a painting Randy owns. The desperation Randy glimpses in whiskey-colored eyes draws him in, as does the desire to submit that he senses beneath Jack’s elegant, driven exterior. While wrestling with his attraction to Jack, Randy has to deal with a homeless teenager, a break-in at Mata Hari, and Jack’s relentless pursuit of the painting called Sunrise. It becomes clear someone’s lying to Randy. Unless he can figure out who and why, he may miss his chance at the love he’s dreamed about in the hidden places of his heart.
Note: Lying Eyes is a standalone gay romance novel with consensual bondage and a strong happy ending. It contains potential spoilers for Robert Winter’s prior novel, Every Breath You Take.

Robert Winter is a recovering lawyer who likes writing about love and adventure much more than drafting a legal brief. Once upon a time, he went to Georgetown University law school. Upon graduation, he moved to New York to work in a large law firm, but later returned to Washington, DC. The legal work was entertaining and Robert spent a lot of time in bankruptcy court, usually representing either groups of creditor or the debtors themselves. But legal work didn’t satisfy the urge Robert felt to tell stories.

When he turned 50, Robert left behind the (allegedly) glamorous world of international law firms and bankruptcy court to pursue his real passion. Now he lives in Montreal with his husband, studying French between trips to exotic locations.

When Robert isn’t writing, he loves to cook Indian food. The aromas of the spice blends excite and challenge him. Although he’s never been to India, the food seems comforting and home-like. Add a trip to the Golden Triangle to the bucket list!

Robert Winter is such a gifted writer. Complex characters, beautiful prose, hot romance abs skillfully calibrated tension. Can’t wait for the next one.

This is the third book in the Pride and Joy series. The sequence runs: Book 1 - September (my personal fave…and I did enjoy the small cameo by David), Book 2 - Every Breath You Take, and Book 3 - Lying Eyes. All three can be enjoyed as standalones, but imo would be best read in order as there are some recurring background characters that feature in each..not to mention they're all just really enjoyable stories.

This tale focuses on 51yo hunky ex Secret Service agent and now piano bar-owner and art enthusiast, Randy (who was a fairly prominent secondary character in Every Breath You Take), and enigmatic Englishman, Jack, an Asst. curator/art historian. I do love an age-gap romance and it’s always refreshing to read about slightly older guys instead of hairless YA’s and twenty-somethings, lol.

There’s also a whiff of the enemies-to-lovers about this one - which is another trope I love. Between Jack constantly sniffing around Randy in the hope of procuring a potentially priceless painting that he purchased in London some years earlier, and his all-round haughty and condescending demeanour and lack of appreciation for the older man’s art collection, Randy understandably takes an immediate dislike toward Jack, ensuring these two get off to a dismal start. But, beneath Jack’s too-polished veneer and their early miscommunication, there’s a genuine and almost immediate connection..and attraction. The Dom in Randy can sense the sub in Jack instantly. But with Randy understandably mistrustful due to an ex who duped him in the past and Jack’s own complicated private life, the two are reluctant to admit the depth of their feelings initially. Cue a little bit of a will-they-won’t-they romance which eventually culminates in some sexy times between the guys. And if you’re not a fan of BDSM, I wouldn’t let that deter you from enjoying this one. As a couple of very mild scenes involving a little bondage and Randy’s leather obsession(?), is about as kinky as this gets really.

And once again (as in EBYT) Randy (more than once) demonstrates his background in law enforcement and all-round good-guy qualities, when he heroically and completely unmindful of his own safety, jumps in and saves homeless, troubled teenager Danny from a gang of thugs, showcasing what a thoroughly decent and naturally protective soul the big guy is, and how much he’s deserving of the love and happiness he finds with Jack. His selfless heroics also lead to, after much mayhem, a rather sweet friendship and almost father/son bond between he and Danny, that shows yet another dimension to Randy’s multifaceted personality.

Overall, there’s a terrific mix of fast-paced thrills and some very clever plot twists here that seamlessly entwine around the leads’ slow burn romance. I also have to say how much I love the warmth and familiarity between the interconnecting group of friends in this series, which continues to expand and flourish with each book. Recommended.

I came on this by accident, not realising that there were earlier books in the series. I enjoyed the mystery aspects of the book but not the kink. Dom/sub is not my genre.

A very enjoyable read. Plenty of mystery to solve, action, romance and heat. Very different to Every Breath You Take but I was surprised this book was not marketed as connected. I nearly missed it and that would have been a real shame.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad

The story in this book is unusual and intriguing, and even though I am not particularly fond of BDSM romances, this one is kind of a light Dom/sub plot I can accept. The writing is extremely polished and good characterization is present too. Even if this is a sequel of a previous books' series I felt no lacking in the plot I might need to fulfill. Problem is that love story between MC 1 and MC2 is not clicking to me. And the ending is kind of forced, something sort of unnatural. But a good book anyhow. With high standards of writing and plot. 3,5 stars would be the right evaluation. (less)

5.0 out of 5 stars Robert Winter does it again!

Randy, who is part owner of the piano bar Mata Hari, was part of the team that rescued Zachary in the first book in this series, Every Breath You Take, so I was really looking forward to his story as well as just reading something else by Robert Winter. I loved Randy and most of the other characters. Some we weren't supposed to love or even remotely like. What I wasn't much interested in was all the art information, but I know it was necessary since the story revolved around Randy's painting, "Sunrise", that may have been worth millions of dollars... and Jack, the appraiser that came from England to see the painting. The attraction was almost immediate between Jack and Randy, but they each knew that distance, and time, along with other issues, was bound to pull them apart. Randy had also recently rescued a young man from a street gang and being big hearted, had given him a place to stay...so the question was what was going to happen to the young man since he couldn't stay at Randy's home forever? All the characters from the first book and some from September (Pride & Joy, appeared briefly in this one also which is something that I always really like. We also got to meet Luc, Randy's uncle's partner. Both men had been a big influence in Randy's life. This is not your average M/M romance. The story is built around and contains a great deal of suspense and mystery. There is also several scenes of consensual bondage and discipline that may not appeal to all readers. Robert Winter is a magnificent storyteller and has again written a book that more than engages you from start to finish. There are so many unexpected plot twists that you never see coming. We are reminded that appearances can be deceiving, and that everyone is deserving of a second chance. I sincerely hope that there will be many, many more books in this series with all these wonderful, delightful characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, Fantastic

Wow.. Fantastic this author is new to me, once I started this book it was hard to put down. The story and characters where gorgeous to read and was totally not expecting the twist in this. Randy and Jack great together as I hoped they would work out. The added hotness of Randy being a Dom in leather was fantastic. I got this on KU but I'll definitely be buying it for my library. Also this wont be the last of Mr Winter's books I'll be reading.💖
Randy owned and operated a piano bar called Mata Hari.. An former SS agent of 25 years he was always careful when his spider senses where alert. When Randy gets a letter from an art museum enquiry about a painting he'd purchased previously he gets curious. It seemed the Sunrise painting was most wanted by few..
Jack walked through the bar seeking out Mr Vaughan about the painting. Eyes heating as they connected but Jack hid putting his a mask on.
Randy helps a young man, Danny who was attacked by taking him in.. an amazing story that follows. Fantastic and highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intrigue and suspense in a well though out and well written novel

4.5 stars - A former Secret Service Agent now working a bar had me wondering. Add that he is an art collector and my brain went into high gear. How did all this come about and why? Randy seemed to be a lost soul, wanting more than his life provided, but was not willing to go after it. That intrigued me. Why did he now accept what life offered when he previously had the world in his hands?

The picture started to come into focus when Jack Fraser walked into Mata Hari. Randy's instincts, though honed in the Secret Service, were off. He knew something wasn't right with Fraser, but couldn't put his finger on it. That said, his lust peaked and pulled him in the opposite direction. Randy saw the facade yet wanted what it was hiding.

Lying Eyes is a perfect title for this book since it seemed that everyone had something to hide. Winter brought me into the story quickly and held my attention throughout the book. I had an idea how it would end and frankly found myself laughing at myself when Winter took me in a direction I hadn't considered.

I enjoyed the manner in which Winter told the story. It flowed! I like when an author can pull me in different directions and then drop me exactly where he wanted me. When I finished reading Lying Eyes, I put down my Kindle and said, "Wow, that's the way a romance mystery should be written." If you enjoy romance mystery with a heartfelt twist, then definitely grab Lying Eyes by Robert Winter. You will enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every book gets better
Reviewed in the United States on 21 September 2017
The first two books from Robert were excellent but this one is just that much better. Randy is my favorite character so far (although the cover model does little justice to the visual I had while reading. Jesse Jackman, just sayin'). I love a bear anyway and Randy epitomized the look and personality I imagine when I look at some guys. This was so intriguing, with Randy's multifaceted character: piano bar owner, ex-Secret Service agent, artist, and protector. Jack was unusual too, becoming an art curator after leaving his limited life in a country village. He was so clueless about Randy's anger, yet insightful about his personality traits, making it hard to reconcile his character. His history, as a naive country boy, lifted right into the more rarified air of art, wealth and museum politics, helped me make sense of it.

The mystery was outstanding, keeping me utterly puzzled right until the reveal. Then, added leather kink and mild BDSM and the story was like catnip for me! Only a couple of sex scenes but holy shnikes, they were hot af. Some bondage was the most extreme act, if anyone's concerned. The smooth pacing and polished writing, made it easy to get carried along in the action. This is an easy recommendation, even more so if you're a romantic mystery maven.
