Real Food for Gestational Diabetes: An Effective Alternative to the Conventional Nutrition Approach Kindle Edition
This can be you! Real Food for Gestational Diabetes offers an alternative to the conventional nutrition approach that embraces nutrient-dense and delicious foods that nourish you and baby without causing high blood sugar.
With the wrong information (or no information at all), far too many women are left alone struggling with erratic blood sugar and excessive weight gain, often leading them to high doses of insulin or medications and difficult births.
Sadly, this often happens despite these moms dutifully following the dietary advice given to them by well-meaning clinicians; a restrictive diet that leaves them feeling unsatisfied, unhappy, and confused about ever increasing blood sugar numbers.
In Real Food for Gestational Diabetes, prenatal nutritionist and diabetes educator, Lily Nichols, RDN, CDE, CLT, sets the record straight, offering revamped carbohydrate recommendations and exercise guidelines based on the latest clinical research.
You can have gestational diabetes and have a healthy baby. Lily will show you how. With this book, you have the tools to turn this diagnosis into a blessing in disguise.
You’ll learn:
- Why conventional diet therapy often fails and what to do instead
- How the right prenatal nutrition can reduce the likelihood you’ll need insulin by 50%
- Exactly which foods raise your blood sugar (and more importantly, which foods DON’T raise your blood sugar)
- How to customize a meal plan with the right amount of carbohydrates for YOU (there’s no one-size-fits-all plan, despite what you may have been told)
- The truth about ketosis during pregnancy (and why checking urine ketones isn’t useful)
- Information on insulin and blood sugar-lowering medications used in pregnancy
- Which foods to emphasize to provide your baby with the right nutrients for optimal development (these real foods have a long history of producing strong, healthy babies)
- The best prenatal exercises to control your blood sugar and prepare for labor
- What to do after delivery to prevent type 2 diabetes

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 January 2025Having just been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes I needed a book that had all the key information. This book is heavy on the explanation but has helpful information on snacks and a few recipes to try at the end of the book. I feel more informed for my diabetes appointment and how to try to manage my blood glucose levels.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 December 2018This is an absolute must buy for anyone with gd, or if you have a loved one who has just been diagnosed please buy them this!
It has helped me so much on my third (and also healthiest) gd pregnancy. It gives me the confidence to eat what’s best for my baby. As it is all research based. Everything is backed up with evidence and explained so well. I love advice presented this way. I need to know the rationale behind advice.
I have never felt so healthy; energy, acne, sleep, digestion, bloat etc has improved massively. I have never received so many compliments about how well I look! All since following this book for my food and supplements.
Also would recommend the regular pregnancy book for any pregnant woman interested in real whole foods and healthy eating for the same reasons, and reduce risks of common pregnancy complications.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 September 2021I purchased *Real Food For Pregnancy* when I was trying to conceive and I found it incredibly helpful. When I was diagnosed with GD I was terrified, but remembered this author had written this book. After reading it I felt so much more at ease. I have such a low tolerance for carbohydrates in this pregnancy and the NHS guidelines were telling me to pack in low fat dairy and add in MORE carbohydrates than my body could handle which was spiking my BS. So far I have stayed diet controlled, baby is measuring well, I haven't gained any weight, and I am so grateful to this book for giving me the tools to keep myself and my baby healthy.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2019This book is very informative on the topic of eating a real food diet during pregnancy and especially for those with gestational diabetes. I was disappointed that there were not more recipes and colour photographs. It is very much a textbook, and the information about real food is very similar to that found in WAPF type books - very sound, but I ended up returning this book as I have similar information available to me in several other books I have purchased and I was looking for something with a greater focus on recipes.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 December 2018Well written and easy to understand. It helped me keep my gestational diabetes under control while on a low carb high fat diet.
It explains very well the science behind GD and how you can control it, especially when the common advice doesn't make any sense and does not work very well
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 August 2017Having been newly diagnosed early on in my pregnancy this book was really helpful and offered very clear advice covering a range of issues besides solely food. I felt more informed and therefore more in control of a situation I had previously felt very out of control and clueless about! Others have mentioned a lack of recipes. There are some to get you going and if you are solely looking for a recipe book then maybe this isn't for you. However there are plenty of websites/Facebook pages with support and recipes on but this is an excellent book to go alongside them and better understand the condition and how you can manage it without putting the fear of God into you!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 December 2015Having recently been diagnosed with gestational diabetes I was keen to read current findings on what to eat/ expect so that I could avoid taking medicine.
This book has given me the confidence and knowledge to change (My already healthy) diet to one that was more suitable to avoiding insulin spikes.
It has been much better than the advice I have been given by the hospital.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has to monitor their blood for gestational diabetes.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 2024146 pages of information and only 21 pages of recipes to team with the 4 day meal plan they outline. I guess you can say it’s a recipe book if you put the bare minimum effort into making it one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Logical GD advice supported by research.
When I found out I had gestational diabetes I FREAKED out. The conventional advice given to me by the hospital seemed to spike me more than assist in managing my blood sugar levels and the answers given to me when I asked questions did not sit true. This book was a God send providing me with information which made sense, supported my belief of eating good wholefoods and finding a balance between what the hospital was telling me and staying true to myself. It took a lot of the stress out of having GD. I recommend it to anyone who is on the GD journey. Most importantly, this book isn’t some crazy person providing advice based on a whim. All her opinions are backed by peer reviewed research which I love!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book for GD
This is the only book that exactly aligned with my goals, cleared my fears out of my own understanding of the correct low carb diet that worked for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have GD, you probably should read this.
I really enjoyed reading this book, IT gave me a lot of Support in better understanding what was going on in my body. Within days of practicing what she says in this book, I could See my numbers drop, not only that, for the first time in my pregnancy I didn't feel nauseous anymore.

Questa dieta mi ha salvata a fine gravidanza quando la mia insulino resistenza era al massimo. Vorrei averlo letto al momento della diagnosi. Peccato che nel nostro belpaese del carboidrato non si possa parlare di questo nuovo approccio.
