About the author

www.theresatomlinson.com
Theresa Tomlinson has been writing historical novels for many years; her titles include THE FORESTWIFE TRILOGY, MOON RIDERS, THE VOYAGE OF THE SNAKE LADY and WOLF GIRL. In recent years she has become fascinated by archaeological finds from the Dark Ages, eg The Staffordshire Hoard, and the discovery of a royal grave near Loftus in Cleveland, containing gold and garnet jewels.
Theresa Tomlinson's new historical murder/mystery A SWARMING OF BEES is now available as a paperback and kindle edition. The action takes place in the cliff top monastery ruled by Abbess Hild - after the famous Synod of Whitby. Fridgyth the half-pagan herb-wife is curious, warm-hearted, and a law unto herself! When she suspects that some of the many deaths, may not be due to a terrible plague that is ravaging the country, Fridgyth sets out to investigate!
Although this is Theresa's first book aimed at an adult market, reviewers have pointed out that it may be enjoyed by young adults too! During the first week in January 2013 A SWARMING OF BEES made No. 3 in the best sellers kindle historical novel charts!
WOLF GIRL may be seen as a prequel - this Young Adult mystery/adventure introduced the character of Fridgyth, along with many of the others that appear in both books - Wulfrun the webster's daughter - along with many recognisable names from history - Hild, Elfled(Aelfleda)Caedmon, King Oswy, Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, Wilfrid of York.
THE TRIBUTE BRIDE - A NEW HISTORICAL NOVEL tells the story of Acha of Deira - mother to King Oswald and King Oswy, the woman at the heart of the founding of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria!
Acha is sent as a secondary bride to the fierce King Athelfrid, when floods ruin the crops and prevent her father from paying the tribute of grain demanded by the overlord! The flooding theme was inspired by recent problems in York, and Pickering - I thought that if it could happen now it could have happened then and it would have caused even worse devastation then and may have led to famine! Acha - a shadowy figure, mentioned only briefly by Bede, lived in a time of bloody land disputes and fierce battles - but this is a story of love, friendship and survival!
A new version of MEET ME BY THE STEELMEN was published in 2019 by Award Publications Limited - I'm also very pleased to announce that a sequel to the story, which moves onto the next generation is also now available from Award Publications - FORGED IN STEEL! More magic mixed with Sheffield history and featuring the new statues in Barkers Pool - The Women of Steel!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 December 2016I read this book originally several years ago and was delighted to find it on Kindle. A beautiful tragic story that really pulls you in.
If you enjoy stories based on history, you will love this book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 July 2003Every young girl needs a heoine in her life, in her imagination - someone like Myrina, the fierce and feisty Amazon who dances and battles her way around the Near East in this re-telling of the story of the fall of Troy. It is a story much told, much interpreted and in the last few years usually from the viewpoint of Cassandra. In The Moon Riders however, Cassandra has a bit- part in this great drama of love-lust, war-lust and gold-lust. Focusing on the Amazons, Theresa Tomlinson's tale tells of this group of warrior equestriennes who are not only accomplished in the use of the bow and arrow but are also ritual dancers who dance in the seasons for the tribes around Troy. Perhaps Theresa Tomlinson finds Cassandra too doom-laden to be worthy of much attention. Certainly, the classic story of Troy is, at the end, the epitome of misery yet in the worst scenes of horror we have to remind ourselves of the age of the readers. Not to give away too much of this particular version, it seems that the sacrifice of Iphigenia has a less tragic outcome than has previously been portrayed (at least it occurs without divine intervention) and the death of Penthesilea shows a nobler side of Achilles than we were led to believe earlier on.
The descriptions of the tribes of Asia Minor add a sense of realism to this version of the heroic epic. We see not only the glorious sophistication of a powerful city but people like the fisher folk. And the atmosphere of deprivation and want in Troy at the end of the siege is compelling.
Nevertheless, there are some parts of the background that are less than complete. These young women are Amazons and although we know that they dance and regularly practise archery, there seems little indication of any routine combat training. And any girl who has ever had a pony or horse understands the constant bond between herself and the animal. I seem to miss a portrayal of this very special closeness. Not only that but Myrina does not seem so very different in the second part of the the book, even though she is a decade older and more battle-weary.
There are however, some good, gripping scenes - for example the freeing of the captured horses and the dancing and chanting of the slave women.
And the story itself is eternal. This new interpretation, based as it is on solid research will have young girls waiting for the next volume, for the next generation perhaps, of Moon Riders.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 November 2014Wonderful story, vivid characters, kept me riveted to th last page, looking forward to the net one.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 May 2016Finally after searching for what seemed an eternity I found this book. I haven't read it in 10 years but I still remember how good it was. Can't wait to finally read it again!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 January 2016Set in the Trojan era, The Moon Riders tells the story of Myrina who joins the legendary and spiritual Moon Riders, aged 13. With the warrior priestesses, Myrina grows in confidence, strength and power and learns how to defend herself and lead an extraordinary group of women. Myrina also becomes best friends with the Princess Cassandra, and has to face the army of Agamemnon, and Achilles, when they come to wage war on Troy.
I remember reading this when I was 13/14 years old and being absolutely gripped. As a young girl, I probably couldn't have read anything better to make me believe in myself and in the power of women. This book is full of powerful woman leaders. Women who aren;t afraid of standing up to men and who can ride and fight alongside the strongest of male warriors. It's also packed jam with female friendships!
I gave this book 4.5 instead of 5 just because on rereading it, I wasn't quite as gripped as i was when I was younger. It was still a fantastic tale about one of my favourite periods of time to read about.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 August 2007I loved this book. It caught my eye in a WHSmiths in the Young Adults section with it's beautiful cover. It's about a group of woman called Moon Riders who are the Amazon warrior woman.
The main character Myrina the Snake Lady is a very powerful female lead. She manages to cope with a lot of pain, trauma and loss from a very young age. The story reads well and I was quickly caught up in the tale. It had a very bittersweet ending at the seige of Troy, but it was good to know that at least her and Cassandra were ok.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, But.....
I have just finished reading this and I must say that it was really good. I didn't know much about the Trojan War or the Amazons before I read this, but now I understand those subjects a lot better. I understand that the Trojan War was with the Greeks against the Trojans and that the scandal with Paris and Helen started the whole thing and who was on which side, but I also learned that there was so much more behind it all besides Paris and Helen. As far as the Amazons go, there were cool facts and I learned what they really were. For historical purposes it was informative and interesting without being stuffy and slow. I definitely recommend it for those purposes.
My complaints about the book is only that I felt there should be more depth. You do understand how the characters feel about everything, but I felt like there was something missing. I understand that the author had a lot of ground to cover with the War and all the little side stories, but I felt like she didn't really explore the depths of individual's drives, fears, and emotions. It also felt like she skimmed on some scenes when you really want a little more.
Another pro of this book, though, is the fact that it is fairly clean. I wouldn't recommend it to people under the age of 11 and 12 because some of the truths are sad and a little hard to take. For example: slaves inside of Troy were really not respected as individual women and the king didn't have a problem that his soldiers had children with them, but the worst thing was that the women were aware that if Troy was taken they would be seriously mistreated by the opposing army. Thankfully, the author describes things very tactfully, like saying men made women their concubines instead of other alternatives. The main character gets married, but there is nothing disturbing.
Overall it was a good book; I might even read the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars great
A preview of the story, whether it was hardback or paperback, used or new. Everything I wanted to know was there already. I think that Amazon is giving great service. I am totally satisfied and recommend Amazon to all my friends and those I deal with in our Animal Sanctuary.
