Purchase options and add-ons

On 12 January 1925, twenty-five-year-old Abdul Kader Bawla, one of the richest men in colonial Bombay and a corporator in the Bombay Municipal Corporation, was murdered on Malabar Hill while out for an evening drive with his mistress, Mumtaz Begum. The objective of the attack was to abduct Mumtaz, who was saved by the appearance of four British army officers who fended off the attackers with nothing more than a golf club. Investigations by the Bombay police revealed a link between the crime and the princely state of Indore. The subsequent controversy led to the abdication of Maharaja Tukojirao Holkar III, the ruler of Indore, to avoid an inquiry. A century later, the sensational murder case continues to be a milestone in the history of the Mumbai police. With a narrative built around a beautiful courtesan, a wealthy heir, a spurned king, an upright police officer and a sensational murder, this book is a masterful chronicle of early twentieth-century colonial India.

This Book is a must read.
I had never heard about the Bawla murder case. This book is based on a murder that took place in Mumbai's Malabar Hill area in the year 1925. Abdul Kader Bawla was murdered on one night when he was going for a drive with his mistress Mumtaz. The author, Dhaval Kulkarni, explores the murder and the other aspects related to that case in depth including the Holkars and the Police department during that time. There is so much to read in this book. It's not just about the murder. The birth of Holkar's Dynasty, their family, their rulers, the author has tried to cover everything in this book.I enjoyed reading the book. The book contains so much of information about the pre-independence era. It's a good book for History lovers.

One of the key aspect of this book, besides the flawless writing is the meticulous research done by the writer, Dhaval Kulkarni. The characters and the timeline of this book is so well described, constructed and presented in a manner that the reader can literally see everything almost identically through the eyes of the writer. Job well done !

The story is about the murder of Bawla in Mumbai. The impact of the murder on the royal family at Indore is explained in great detail.
The book is not focused on the murder itself as much as it is on the history of its impact on the abdication of the Maharajah of Indore and the subsequent fallout in the family.
The history part is well researched but presented in an rather pedantic manner.

The book is an interesting one starts with accurate details of the case but after the middle gets waylaid & talks about other information though connected with Holkars not exactly related to the topic in hand looks like filling of the pages to make a sizable novel these other topic can make a novel in themselves with more information & details some of the information(facts) are wrong says Raja of Barwani was blackmailing among others to start with it should be H.H.Captain Sir Rana Ranjot Singhji of Barwani KCIE & in fact was a dear friend of the Maharaja of Holkar & very rightly advised him to abdicated which he eventually did!

The storytelling is distorted by excessive history which was not really relevant to the story.
However, must appreciate the author's excellent research on the subject.
