About the author

Hello! I've spent more than twenty years as a journalist and broadcaster, fronting BBC radio and television programmes, making documentaries and travelling around the world in search of powerful stories. I wrote 'The Skills' because I wanted to translate some of what I have learned as a communicator into principles and methods to help boost success in any field. In the most recent paperback iteration 'The Skills: How to Win at Work' there are bite-size takeaways at the end of the chapters. I hope women and men facing any big career moments or life choices will find things that resonate, are useful and give confidence and courage. Bonne chance!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 October 2018A really excellent and inspiring read. Mishal Husain is a rarity amongst people at the top of their profession—someone of great integrity and humanity. The book is full of practical suggestions and insights which most successful people would be reluctant to share. One to go back to before that important meeting/job application/difficult decision…
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 June 2019It's not easy to write into a genre that feels saturated at the moment. Mishal Hussein writes like a kind, maternal best friend. The result is a book that's as enjoyable as it is helpful.
Using various examples from her personal and professional life, Hussein makes an argument, but also uses examples and techniques to allow its application to be extended into the reader's own life. There are lots of good tips here for any professional, at any point in their career.
And what a cover..!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 April 2020Mishal speaks so openly and honestly in "The Skills", about juggling a high powered career at the BBC, being a British Pakistani female in a newsroom all the while raising a family. She is an inspiration to all and one of the finest journalists around.
This book makes a great gift to a mentee, budding young journalist you may have in your family or a female colleague.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 October 2018I'd heard Mishal's podcast episodes on The Pool, in which she talked about some of the skills from this book, and was curious to read more. The book itself isn't as snappy or practical as the podcasts, but I was impressed with it in other ways. It is not just a career self-help book. It is a powerful guidebook on skills that, yes, will enhance your work life, but which will also enhance all other aspects of your life too. From resilience to speaking up for yourself, this is handbook for life. Being that Mishal is clearly a high-performing and very intelligent woman, this isn't written in a way which will be accessible to everyone. She discusses the skills and sets them in compelling context with well-researched gender studies, but if you're looking for practical implementation you may need to do some wider reading. Some parts felt too in-depth for me, at least where I am in my career right now. But what I took from the parts relevant to me far outweighed the bits I found myself skimming over, and I can only imagine that what hits home for me will develop as my career does. I've never read a career book before, but I have a feeling I wont need to read any others.
I received a NetGalley of this title from HarperCollins UK. All views are my own.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 October 2019Personal story of one particular woman specific to her background and chosen career. Respect for telling her story publicly and admitting her difficulties and mistakes. However, I haven’t found the book helpful or relevant as to giving any insights, tips or advice, let alone skills, to anybody just starting their careers
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 October 2018I enjoyed the practicality and honesty of this book. Mishal really does want to pass on what she has learnt so far to others and help them - this book is relevant for everyone and all ages.
