Steam Highwayman 1: Smog and Ambuscade Paperback – Illustrated, 31 Dec. 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
You close the regulator and bring the heavy Ferguson velosteam to a halt. From the crest of the hill you can see the lumbering freight wagons and the steam carriages of the gentry making their way through the rain-lashed night. Little do they expect the sudden and terrible assault of the Steam Highwayman…
What next for you? A midnight attack on the nobles travelling the Bath Road? Will you rescue the Wethered Brewery from closure or punish the wicked Colonel Snappet? Will you ally with the Compact for Workers' Equality or find work protecting hauliers on the Wycombe run? Is trading cargo on the Thames more than a profitable sideline? Can you make your way to the glamorous Cliveden Ball or win the Spenser Cup?
Steam Highwayman is an open-world adventure gamebook series in which you, the reader, must choose your path through an alternate Steampunk history. With a pair of dice and a pencil you can track your adventure through an England that never was, discovering secrets, solving quests, rescuing those in need and punishing those who deserve vengeance. The midnight road calls!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2023The book is quiet well thought out and keeps children engaged from start to the end.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2022Great book
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 June 2022Well written, and different from the usual fantasy gamebooks. If you're a fan of gamebooks, especially open-world ones (e.g. Fabled Lands), you can't go wrong with this. I'm waiting for books 3-6 in the series!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 June 2018We love this book. Both my sons (age 12 and 8) have been enthralled by this. Wonderful storylines, expertly crafted to lead you on new adventures with an array of possibilities.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 July 2021Martin Noutch's Steam Highwayman is weirdly addictive. I started by 'driving round the map' but the fun really started by going into the pubs/places, then engaging with people and quests. It is an open-world book... where you explore and interact with the Marlow area (England) but in another time... another reality. For me, it helped to print off the map and record the locations as I went, so I could jump back to locations I'd previously been. It felt like a computer game (that I really want to play now!) but the scenery, people and events are in your mind. Would you like ot be a steampunk highwayman for a while? Then get your copy of 'Smog and Ambuscade'... and enjoy the adventure!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 January 2020Steam Highwayman is an ongoing series of open-world gamebooks with a steampunk setting, with Smog and Ambuscade being the first in a planned series of six books. Prose style, world building and gameplay are all of a high standard. Recommended to old-school gamebook fans, and to readers interested in the combination of games and interactive fiction.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 November 2019Absolutely love how Martin Noutch writes. Can’t wait to order part 2 once I’ve finished Smog & Ambuscade.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2019I've just started playing this. Smog and Ambuscade is the first book in the series with Highways and Holloways just come out. These are roleplaying gamebooks like the ones you could buy in the eighties but much better. These are adventures, set in and around the Chiltern Hills and along the Thames, centred on Marlow and Henley respectively. The game is set in an alternative steampunk world of steam carriages and wagons, airships and, being steampunk, goggles. The world is full of evil rich folk who mistreat their underlings and you are either on the run, out to battle the masters or most probably both. As you ride around the countryside on your Ferguson velosteam watch out for the constables!
I ordered Smog and Ambuscade when I met the author at a steampunk event a couple of years ago and supported his crowdfunding project. I like to support other authors and thought it would be interesting as I was planning to crowdfund a book of my own. I can recommend these if you fancy a game where the special effects are in your head and you use nothing more high tech than a soft pencil, an eraser and a couple of dice. You can buy them on Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool gamebook
Chanced upon this while looking for choose your own adventure gamebooks. This is part of a successful gamebook series on Kickstarter (with books 4 to 6 in the making). Based on positive reviews and its fun theme, I decided to give all current 3 books a try, and they do not disappoint. Am very happy with the quality and gameplay, except that book 1 came with its cover slightly scratched and crumpled. This seldom happens with Amazon and I hope this doesn’t repeat
