Good quality construction, does what it says on the tin!

Good quality construction, does what it says on the tin!
I’ve always brought monitors with stands that let me adjust their height and tilt So when I decided to upgrade my 2009 Mac Pro to an 27inch iMac I needed a monitor mount. The Ergotron LX comes in three sections, the desk clamp and pole, an extension arm and the adjustable arm.The desk clamp can be adjusted depending on the thickness of your desk, I didn’t need to do this, so it was just a case of positioning the clamp on my desk and tightening the screw. If your desk is fixed to the wall, you can drill a hole through your desk and mount the desk clamp that way, you would need access to the underside of the desk to tighten the screw. You then place the extension arm onto the pole. Then it’s time to install the arm onto your monitor. The VESA mount allows you to rotate your monitor from portrait to landscape mode. If you don’t need this functionality, you will need to insert a screw into the VESA mount to stop it rotating. You need to do this before you attach the monitor, you can’t adjust it afterwards. The VESA mount attaches to the monitor using four thumb screws, unfortunately the VESA mount can’t be detached from the adjustable arm. So, when it comes to attaching the arm to the extension arm it is very cumbersome, especially with a heavy iMac.The next stage is to adjust the tension of the arm, the only adjustment I needed to make was to the height adjustment. This is done by inserting the supplied tool in the top of the adjustable arm and turning it clockwise to tighten it up, as the iMac is heavy (9.2Kg about the same weight as a West Highland Terrier!) I had to turn it allot. You can also adjust the side to side and Tilt motion. Finally, it’s time to do the cable management, the extension arm has a plastic tray which you lay the cables on and then clip to the underside of the arm. I found this a bit fiddly there is not much room and you need to be careful you’re not trapping any cables. I was only installing a power cable and an ethernet cable, I tried to add a USB cable but there was not enough room.In the adjustable arm, the cables are hooked to the underside of the arm using cable ties. This is easier but you need to make sure your happy with your cable management before tightening the ties. The ties attach to hooks on the underside of the arm so you can replace them at a future date.In conclusion, I love how the Ergotron looks and it feels good quality with all metal construction. I can adjust the position of the iMac with no problems and it doesn’t move once put in position. The main downside is the fact that the VESA mount can’t be detached from the adjustable arm, making installation cumbersome if you have a heavy monitor.

I bought this after my previous monitor arm (Which was the first item that shows up when you search "Monitor Arm" on Amazon) which cost a reasonable £29.99 sheared in half dropping my monitor after only 18 months of use. The monitor wasnt even out of the rated weight and thankfully wasn't damaged, but a close call.

I saw a Linus Tech Tips link for this arm and despite being a little put of by the price could see it was an excellent product and found a YouTube video on it that showed me the product. I wasn't wrong. Really Really happy with this!

Very easy to assemble one piece has the tall pole attached to a desk clamp which I clamped to the table (It does include other optiona than the clamp if you want to drill and bolt this through the desk but can't see a need). Then another arm which is screwless slots onto that pole in seconds. Then I screwed my monitor onto the third arm with the 4 Vesa mounting screws and slipped that onto the arms and that was it. Done. You can adjust a silver ring on the tall pole with an allen key to move the bracket higher or lower on the pole and adjust the tension so your monitor is moveable but doesn't sag with a second allen key. Took us 10 minutes.

    Pros:
Excellent Range of Movement best I've seen up and down quite high 360 rotation if your cables allow.

Exceptionally sturdy and heavy build quality, will support almost any modern monitor weights you can throw at it.

Good looking in Chrome and black.

Easy assembly in 10 to 30 mins for a partially diasbled person with one helper.

Range of mounting options included 4 thumbscrews to mount the screen nice touch if you want to remove screen often or normal screws for permanent use or more security.

    Cons:
Potentially cost prohibitive for some people but you really do get what you pay for and if you can save or stretch for it, it really is worth it.

Summary: An excellent design and high quality item which is a rarity amongst a sea of mass produced rubbish. Maybe the price should be a tiny bit lower but considering the sheer weight of metal used and the design time they must have put into it to keep it sleek yet functional and everything included is still worth it.

If you need a monitor arm don't make my mistake with a cheaper option unless say you had a 15" LCD that weighs the same as a feather or don't value your screen and buy this one. Hope it helps!

With my set up specifically, I will be buying an arm extension for it as it ended up being a tiny bit short for my particular needs. I think it’s really worth it! Especially considering the tablet it’s holding is extremely expensive, I wouldn’t want to get a cheap knock off arm for that kind weight 🙏

Like some others have wrote, I put off buying this due to the price, but since setting it up I have fell in LOVE with these monitor arms. My old one was cheap and it showed, left a nasty dent in my desk due to the weight of my monitors despite them being under the weight limit, and was overall hard to work with.

    These arms? A delight;
    - incredibly easy to set up, takes literally less than 10 minutes or even 5 if you're handy.
    - they FEEL strong, especially when positioning your monitor, no feeling of them about to fall off at any moment.
    - amazing flexibility! you can put them in damn near any position! my old setup had my bigger monitor SAT on my desk because they had no strength, now it sits as high as I want it with no issue or sagging.

overall, the price is 120% worth it! do yourself a favour and don't cheap out, treat yourself to high quality monitor arms. the quality of life they have provided to my desk is immeasurable.

It was very easy to install and works perfectly, it's a replacement for a cheaper version (less than 50 pounds) and I can tell now it's totally worth to invest more on these kind of things. The previous one couldn't hold my 32" monitor and it was imposible to adjust. This one stays in place no matter how small the adjustment. Highly recommend this arm

I have been using this to hold up my older cintiq monitor for about a year now. genuinely zero complaints! it holds it at the angles i need without drooping over time, it makes the monitor easy to move around my desk. I can swap between drawings angles and regular monitor use angles. The connection to the desk is sturdy and i have no worries about it buckling in any way. it was easy to set up, and once i tweaked all the screws, it was perfect! Despite the price being high, i still recommend this arm for anyone needing a large range of motion and angles for their monitors.

The Ergotron LX is one of the best monitor arms you can buy on the market.

They are an industry brand that sell to businesses so they are reliable. Sure you can buy a way cheaper monitor arm, but this one will retain its tension, doesn’t make any noise while moving it, has great location control, and looks amazing.

The installation is easy, and the amount of space it takes up is minimal.

I’ve had mine for months now (this is a late review after trying it out for a long time) and I love it. It included everything necessary for installation.

I am using it on a 24 inch and 27 inch monitor and it works flawlessly. It holds them well.

I would say if you have the money then buy this for sure. Don’t buy a cheaper monitor arm if you can afford to buy this. It’s worth the money.

You don't have to read it all, but if you're already looking into buying this, there's a decent chance you are in a similar situation. If I was being nitpicky this would be a 4/5, but seeing as how there's really no other manufacturer that readily provides a solution to my problem it really is just the best I can get, from what I've seen.

I upgraded from an LG 34UC89G-B 34" 21:9 to an Alienware AW3423DW 34" 21:9 and wanted to keep both monitors, with the new one on bottom and old on mounted on top. My old 2 arm mount was not going to be able to support this much weight as my other monitor was just a 27" 16:9 and it barely held those together. I didn't want to have to screw anything into my wall and I wasn't 100% sure on my desk space so I wanted free moving arms for orienting the monitors before finalizing where I want them to stay.

Once I got this I was able to set my monitors up stacked on top of each other. While the bottom one isn't quite sitting as low as it can go, it's not far off. But the top monitor is just about using the mount's maximum capabilities in terms of being able to space these monitors apart while still leaving a tiny bit of room for adjustment. I have been able to pull my top monitor forward and rotate it portrait for documents and such though I have not done the same with the bottom monitor.

    ______________________________________________________

    Overall actual use after setup:
    9/10

The monitors themselves are not on the extreme end of heavy but they're not light. They both fall within the specifications of the mount. But where Ergotron excels with the LX is that it will actually support curved monitors up to that weight as well, as the curvature changes the center of balance of the overall monitor and puts more stress when extended out than your typical flat monitor. This is usually where you can see other people having issues with sag when approaching the upper limits of other mounting systems. These have not sagged at all since tightening down the screws and move with a fair bit of range, staying in place afterwards. However I do not extensively move my monitors around often and don't know how well it would hold up if you just kept moving them around constantly, though with the construction quality I'd wager it would be fine.

One thing I was told from a friend who has the same mount: if your monitor is really bottom heavy for whatever reason and you decide to use it portrait style, the minor taps and thumps from your desk will cause it to try to rotate back to a horizontal position, skewed about 5-10 degrees. It's very minor and just takes a quick second to readjust but keep in mind that it may happen as 1 side is now far heavier than the other.

    ______________________________________________________

    Setup process:
    9/10

The setup itself was very easy. I saw other reviews having issues with it and maybe getting some help but if you follow the instructions provided, it is extremely easy, especially compared to setting up other mounts where you have to screw in the whole assembly to the monitor and take the entire piece and clamp it on your desk. You need to clamp down the base and bottom arm portions of the mount, then screw in the upper portions to the monitors BEFORE putting the rest of the mount together. The top arm portion falls right into the bottom and you just tighten the screw afterwards. If you can physically lift your monitor + 8 ounces or so, you will have no issues putting it together. One thing I will note: tightening the actual swivel head on the monitor so that the tension matches the weight of the monitor may be difficult if you are short since it adjusts from the top.

WARNING: If your desk is particle board or something, I highly recommend buying reinforcement plates for the clamp. The clamp that the LX comes with is fairly sizeable but if you're going to be putting 50 lbs of pressure on 1 spot on your desk, it's best to not worry about the weight snapping your desk in half. If your desk isn't sturdy material: the arm mount will hold up, your desk will not. You're already splurging on this mount, don't cheap out and break your desk and potentially your monitors by skimping out on a $10 metal plate. If you don't want to go that route and don't care much about aesthetics, you can just use some wood.

    ______________________________________________________

    Cable management:
    5/10

Cable management looked like a mere afterthought. It's serviceable and hides the cables well enough but it's nothing to write home about. This feature has been better executed in cheaper models.

    ______________________________________________________

    Range of motion:
    8/10

Range of motion is better than most for sure. While it will still hold them in place, some positions and setups can be limited if you have enormous monitors. If you're using 2 24" monitors you will have zero issues, but the more you approach 40", even on 1 monitor, the options get more and more limited.

    ______________________________________________________

    Final notes:

I wish the pole was longer. That would solve a lot of issues people have had with mobility using large monitors. The arm mounts themselves hold up well, the fitting of large monitors just leaves something to be desired, especially out of something as expensive as this.

    Cable management:
    5/10

Cable management looked like a mere afterthought. It's serviceable and hides the cables well enough but it's nothing to write home about. This feature has been better executed in cheaper models.

    Final notes:

I wish the pole was longer. That would solve a lot of issues people have had with mobility using large monitors. The arm mounts themselves hold up well, the fitting of large monitors just leaves something to be desired, especially out of something as expensive as this.
