Mirror Wars:: Double Jeopardy Paperback – 14 Jun. 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Called to the scene of a grisly double murder in a northern English village, Detective Inspector Dave Barnes thinks he's seen everything - until the threads of his investigation unwind an otherworldly secret.
As the Inspector and his team delve deeper into the case, a former history professor, with a personal interest in the crime, steps forward to provide bizarre clues that seem too impossible to be true. And, as Professor Claire Tulley shares her discoveries dating back to a failed military experiment 90 years earlier, DI Barnes realises that he's embroiled in a cover-up that reaches the highest levels of the government and beyond.
On a parallel Earth, Colonel David Barnes observes his doppelgänger with contempt as the detective edges closer to learning the truth about alternate worlds and the multi-dimensional portals that link them. But, as the Colonel seeks to assume control, he will do whatever it takes to overcome those in his way, even if that means assassinating the man reflected in the mirror.
With the fate of his Earth at stake, and realizing that not everyone around him is who they appear to be, Detective Inspector Barnes and his team must battle for their survival. But how can he win the fight when his own reflection is plotting against him?

About the author
Born in Hartlepool in 1970. I have lived in Langley Park, Durham, England up until 2006, where I moved to Northern Ireland married my wife, Monica in 2007 (still very much happily married).
I love reading fantasy, science fiction, action & adventure and thrillers. Favourite authors are Stephen King, James Herbert, Clive Cussler, Dean Koontz, Audrey Niffenegger and Neil Gaiman. I am a big Marvel Comics fan and enjoy watching movies. Favourite tv shows are Blake’s 7, Babylon 5 and Star Trek.
In April 2020 my love of fantasy and science fiction inspired me to write my first book – Double Jeopardy, the first book in my mirror wars series – which contains nods to some of my favourite authors, films and TV shows that have ignited my imagination over the years. I also used my “experiences” of being a twin to help me write about evil doppelgangers!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 July 2024This book starts with an ingenious premise - what if the reflection looking back at you in the mirror was plotting against you - and expands it into a gripping science fiction thriller with great world building and genuine suspense throughout.
With touches of Quatermass, and an idea that never gets old of hidden worlds just a fingertip away behind a mirror, this is a treat for fans of sci fi with a touch of horror and psychological thriller. As someone from the North East of England it was a particular treat to read about locations I recognise from my youth, and some great characters that reminded me of the region.
Perhaps I'm biased and a bit of nostalgia for home gained a couple of extra points but this was hugely enjoyable and I'm a click away from reading the follow up, Oracle's Vision.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 April 2022I am not a big fan of science fiction stories, but I was sceptical when a friend recommended I read this book. To be honest, I was really surprised I enjoyed it, it had gripped me from the first chapter, to the extent I wouldn’t really class it as science fiction, but more of a conspiracy thriller.
The characters feel very real, with their own faults and qualities. Especially the characters on the alternate Earth, who are all playing their own games against one another. Surprisingly, the character I liked the most is the antagonist – Colonel Barnes, the main character’s – Inspector Dave Barnes - counterpart. Intelligent as he is ruthlessly manipulative, but despite his despicable nature, I actually liked him!
The story itself is very written with the story flowing, leaving many twists and turns. With a truly memorable ending that leaves the reader wanting to know more!
It’s a shame this isn’t a TV show, it would have had me on the edge of my seat.
I would definitely recommend this book if you like reading stories with that leaves you asking for more.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 August 2024Here is my review for Double Jeopardy by Alan Bayles
This book is a terrific read. It’s a great science fiction story with the idea of a parallel Earth and doppelgangers plotting against each other. This is a great use of the author’s imagination. I liked the premise of the story and enjoyed the characters, especially DI Dave Barnes and DS Andy Jenkins, his sidekick. They worked well together. The story was well written with some historical factors in there, so perhaps some research has been done by the author prior to the writing of this book. Also, I like the fact that murder is involved in the story and the ME is stumped by something that comes up in the postmortem. I’m really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 August 2024Double Jeopardy is an interesting, exciting and consuming sci-fi thriller. The story has an interesting premise of our world and parallel universe that is accessed through mirrors. I found the first chapter a little confusing as I was tying to work out what was going on, but the story soon settled into a rhythm. The parallels between the two universes were clearly interwoven. There is a great level of intrigue as the reader waits to find out what the mysterious creatures are. The creatures remind me of the Warhammer Universe Skitarii coupled with the Predator. If you love AVP , the Warhammer Universe or just want a good sci-fi novel this book is for you!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 July 2021A 1930s England experiment to harness a great power goes wrong and thereby allows a “bell” to ring across the space between worlds….and somebody takes notice.
Ninety years later two North East England detectives who are called in to investigate the shocking murder of a family in the former mining village of Langley Park are soon drawn into a bigger investigation that their training has never prepared them for.
This novel is a great read. The pace moves along quickly. The characters are well developed and you feel like you can relate and at times sympathise, and in some cases, feel uncertain about. The writer even manages to insert the current worldwide events in a very different light!
Each chapter I finished had me wanting to turn to the next page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling SciFi Adventure
Wow.This book grabbed me by the hand and pulled me through a wild, thrilling adventure from start to finish. And, if you say that you knew early what was going to happen in this one - I'm gonna call you a liar. But maybe you're just more knowledgeable about science fiction than me. Sci-fi isn't my top genre, but it is one I enjoy - and this book absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR list. And, preferably sooner than later! If you need an escape from the current political climate. Well, maybe not that.
But it will offer you an adventurous romp through some pretty fantastical notions that will keep you wondering for the entirety of the book! It's a pretty extensive cast of characters, and I'll admit that I did get confused some. The whole doppelganger thing exacerbates that. It's somewhat easy to separate the doppelgangers from each other, but doubling up characters means that it gets even messier and more complex after a while! I did love the main cast of characters on what I considered the good side - but who knows? Maybe you'll consider parallel Earth the good side. Maybe you're a doppelganger. Maybe I am.
And that ending, well, that was something I wasn't expecting. I'm not going to give anything away, but I had chills for a few minutes. I might be getting them again writing this.
This one isn't listed as horror - just thriller, but my scaredy cat meter and I think it edges just onto the horror side. I mean, sometimes I still get chills in the mirror from Bloody Mary. So, yeah. mildly horrific. It just depends on your tolerance.
But I'm trying to stretch myself this year, and I'm absolutely still picking up the next one and probably tearing through it as well. Can't wait to dig in!

5.0 out of 5 stars A sharp and riveting sci-fi mystery..
Alan Bayle’s Mirror Wars: Double Jeopardy is a terrific sci-fi mystery! I am so excited that this is a series and can’t wait for the next instalment. The premise is familiar and yet fresh. Fans of the Star Trek Mirror Universe or the short-lived, albeit excellent show Counterpart will highly enjoy this book.
WW2 scientists doing weird scientist stuff accidentally open a portal to another universe, but what they awaken is a shrewd and merciless empire hellbent on manipulating this side. As the bodies begin to pile, it’s up to a local police force to get to the bottom of this paranormal mystery. Filled with realistic and well-crafted characters and mind-bending science, this book is primed and ready to deliver thrills.

4.0 out of 5 stars What’s on the other side of the mirror??!!
This was one heck of a read. The story was fast paced and didn’t give you a chance to get bored! Although there were some places I would have liked to delve into things just a little more it wasn’t too much that detracted from my enjoyment of reading. This story was full of action, suspense, twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. If you’ve ever gotten that eerie feeling that there’s more than just your reflection looking back at you in the mirror, this book gives you a reason to think a little harder about it!
We follow Detective Inspector David Barnes as he discovers a strange sequence of events following a gruesome murder and as he follows his instincts into uncovering just what has been going on for well over 80 years he finds out that things are never what they seem and even people can be completely different as if they’ve been replaced by a totally different person!
In an alternate reality we see Colonel Barnes, a ruthless soldier who doesn’t let much stand in his way, even if it happens to be another person. He finds his doppelgänger a source of frustration and one that he’d rather be rid of, but finds out that the more dangerous hazard is the dangerous and calculating superior officer, General Cooper who always seems to be a few steps ahead.
As both worlds clash, not only do we see how the same person could turn out so differently if they happened to be raised in different worlds, but also just how hard someone will fight for their beliefs. Yet there’s always someone else just behind the scenes pulling the strings. With an ending that leaves you wanting for more, I can’t wait to get my hands on the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal
Mirror Wars is what I call real-deal science fiction. The main characters, good and evil, stick with you. The style is a bit of a hard-boiler (which suits my taste). Super creative take on the mirror universe subgenre. The book was so good that I also listened to it on Audible later, and the voice narration is superb. Alan Bayles has the gift.
