Rebel Rebel Kindle Edition
It’s 2007. Bowie is alive, and Jess is at university with her boyfriend, Robert. Their future together is all planned out, and Jess willnever, ever, have to be alone again.
At a party, Jess meets Astrid, a fellow Bowie fan whose world brims with adventure and possibility. Amidst clinking glasses and the infectious rhythm of 'Let’s Dance', she is drawn into Astrid’s orbit. Their friendship blossoms – Astrid, the enigmatic musician, and Jess, the wordsmith. Astrid inspires Jess to explore her own creative aspirations and question the essence of her existence.
But beneath the surface, tensions grow. Robert is uneasy about Astrid's influence, and Astrid can’t understand why Jess stays with him. With the risk of losing it all, Jess finds herself at the crossroads of two worlds – one familiar and safe, the other filled with the intoxicating pull of another path…
As Jess is pulled into a hedonistic adventure that challenges conventions, celebrates the power of female friendship, and champions creativity, she faces a daunting choice. Will she find a way to navigate her dreams and desires before it’s too late?

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 July 2024I'm not even certain that I can put into words just how wonderful I think this book is.
Jen Eve Taylor writes with flawless clarity and brings her characters to life with what I can only assume is some kind of sorcery. This story and these characters will stay with me for a long time and I'm not sure I'll ever be ready to let go of them.
Jess' experience at university mirrors mine in so many ways that I felt, in some parts, that I was reading about my own life.
Which is exactly the beauty of this book. We all have parts of Jess in us, some of us (like me) more than others. This book is for those of us who have always been told we're 'too loud' or 'too much' those of us who spent far too much time shrinking ourselves to the smallest version we could be so we didn't annoy anyone or be noticed. Those of us who have been TERRIFIED to take up the space that we have every right too.
This book is for all of us. Those who stayed, those who left, those who are thinking about it. Those who know exactly who they are and those who need the encouragement to be exactly who they are.
I CANNOT recommend this book enough. I adore it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2024“Rebel Rebel” is a brilliant book. It’s not short – over 400 pages – but it’s a joy to read. The only disappointment is coming to the end. Jen Eve Taylor is a skilled author. She writes with real clarity so that you’re barely aware of her presence. Instead, you’re drawn imperceptibly into an intriguing intimacy that makes you feel part of the relationships and events taking place. The story starts with Jess, the narrator, in sixth form. She has no confidence in or understanding of herself, particularly when it comes to social interactions, “I couldn’t bear the idea of people not liking me.” So she’s both excited and terrified when the relaxed and popular Robert takes an interest in her. He is soon acting as a bridge between Jess and a world which she finds intimidating and confusing. When the two of them partner up and decide to go to university together, Jess’s future suddenly seems safe and full of hope. However, the story really starts when Jess meets Astrid at a party. Astrid is a wild and spirited character and her friendship exposes Jess to undreamt of ideas. Jess finds herself being pulled in contradictory directions. With Robert, she is protected from the unknown by living in a carefully proscribed world. With Astrid, the unknown is there to be relished and fears mere obstacles to be overcome. As Jess’s life flowers, she struggles to decide which direction her future should take. Towards a world free of fear with Robert or to a world full of possibility with Astrid? Jen Eve Taylor has a talent for describing vulnerability and uncertainty. Jess is a brilliantly realised character and I found myself cheering her on, hoping that in time she came to realise her own strengths and value as a person. I don’t know how I’ve managed to come this far without saying a word about the music which permeates every page of “Rebel Rebel”. Maybe that’s something you can discover for yourself by reading this stunning book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 March 2024A wonderful story of love and friendship. Somehow every character is relatable! Jen has captured moments so perfectly, you feel like you’re recalling your own memories. What a beautiful book by a talented author. The amount of music references is also very impressive.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 May 2024This is a book about friendship, love, lust, pushing self-imposed limits, pushing limits imposed by others but most of all I think it is a book about living YOUR life. I binged this book one sunny Sunday. There is so much to love in this book - I loved the themes, I loved the pace and not least, I loved Astrid. We should all strife to be a little more Astrid. I binged this book one sunny Sunday. It is the perfect holiday read or coffee shop read or commute read or bedtime read. Wherever you read, please read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and compelling novel!
Rebel Rebel is a brilliant novel and Jen Eve Taylor is a brilliant writer. She perfectly captures the subtleties and complexities of human motivations, behaviour and relationships.
The novel plot follows the tale of Jess, a young woman finding her path and place in the world. Jess is torn between the reliability and predictability of the life she has been living and the world of adventures that her new best friend Astrid opens her eyes to.
Through Jess’ eyes with Astrid’s influence, the novel is a powerful invitation to all women to live their dreams and to know their worth. A thought provoking and compelling read from start to finish. Jen Eve Taylor is amazing and everyone needs to read this novel!
