The Lindens Kindle Edition
Richly textured, funny and moving, this is an epic novel about home and family, love and loss. About birds and trees, vengeful goats, mushroom trips and anarcho-syndicalist rabbits. About the passage of time, the circling of the seasons and the forks in the paths of our lives.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 November 2024A beautifully written account of a single house and its inhabitants, spanning 150 years. There are some wonderful characters, and an interesting look at changing culture and concerns. Ultimately a heartwarming story - or series of interlocking stories. Ideal as a Christmas or holiday read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 November 2024Not sure I can write an objective review if my son's book, but all I can say is that I loved it. The story flows easily down the years, and the house at its heart is portrayed with conviction and affection. Unusually heartwarming in these troubled times.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 November 2024Lovely feel-good story with a satisfying ending. Recommended for all those who day dream. Thoroughly enjoyed reading and imagining the house and people.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 January 2025Barney Jeffries has written a book that effortlessly spans several generations, from the lifestyle of the late 19th century to the present day – indeed to the future. He writes in detail about the lives and thoughts of the people who live in a big house, The Lindens. His style is charming and understated. The sweep of years through which the house moves is portrayed in a series of miniatures of the people who live in it, have lived in it, or want to live in it.
There is a garden, or rather an acre of land, in which to grow vegetables, make cider from the apple trees, and enjoy watching wildlife around the pond. A place to grow up in. A rural spot that stands apart from the world outside and contains enough to satisfy the lives of its inhabitants.
So much writing these days contains sarcasm, deceit, disillusion. Not “The Lindens” which is full of a gentle assurance. There are some baddies, mistakes are made, but the house survives and provides a backcloth to the generations who live here, with their memories of the past and a future, not to be feared but to look forward to. At the end of the book a swallow that has travelled across the world returns to The Lindens. Just as for the swallow, the house is a rock of certainty in an uncertain world.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 January 2025It might be an understatement to describe this as a magnificent work. I began thinking this was going to be a long read - would it hold my attention? The first short chapter had me hooked. From then on the story just keeps rolling. Each chapter - some of which are perhaps a little long by current expectations. Their brilliance though lies in the fact that they are almost stand-alone stories. As a historian, this book is also well-researched giving glimpses of rural and social life across three centuries - with some detail, like the implications of the 1925 Law of Property Act!
Simply, it is a well-written and engaging story.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 January 2025This is an eminently enjoyable book covering a century of social history with a perceptive portrayal of people, and a knowledge of nature. Country customs are woven into a story that gently but grippingly leads into a fascinating finish. Looking forward to your next novel Barney……

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 November 2024This is the kind of book that stayed with me for a good while after finishing it. The Lindens is a beautiful house and world and the stories span so many different experiences. It was funny, heartbreaking and very readable. I enjoyed the history, the characterisation and the relatable references to time periods in my own life. Pretty impressive to come up with so many different names too!

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful story
Life’s joys & sorrows, politics & philosophy, art, gardening and awe over the beauty of nature and the beauty we create…played out over generations.
We dream our futures and do our best to make our dreams come true…and then life happens, sometimes challenging us even to be who we imagine ourselves to be.
I love books that have this depth, while also being the kind of story you take to the coziest place you can find, to lose yourself in great storytelling.
