Continuing Bonds in Bereavement: New Directions for Research and Practice (Series in Death, Dying, and Bereavement) Paperback – Import, 21 Nov. 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
The introduction of the continuing bonds model of grief near the end of the 20th century revolutionized the way researchers and practitioners understand bereavement. Continuing Bonds in Bereavement is the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art collection of developments in this field since the inception of the model. As a multi-perspectival, nuanced, and forward-looking anthology, it combines innovations in clinical practice with theoretical and empirical advancements. The text traces grief in different cultural settings, asking questions about the truth in our interactions with the dead and showing how new cultural developments like social media change the ways we relate to those who have died. Together, the book’s four sections encourage practitioners and scholars in both bereavement studies and in other fields to broaden their understanding of the concept of continuing bonds.

"Continuing Bonds in Bereavement is a large buffet covering various aspects of continuing relationships with deceased loved ones. Created by expert chefs, the dishes cover theory, therapeutic experiences (with transcripts that are very moving), forgiveness, after-death communications, religion, and culture. Choose what interests you. Digest. Learn. Grow."
Lillian Range, PhD, professor of psychology and counseling, University of Holy Cross
"A powerful concept demands extensive explanation and theoretical exploration. This encyclopedia-like volume does just that for continuing bonds and will serve as a benchmark reference for ongoing study and research."
Douglas J. Davies, PhD, DLitt, Hon Dr Theol, professor in the study of religion, director of Centre for Death and Life Studies, Durham University
"Finally, a pithy comprehensive synthesis of evolving bereavement theories, practices, and paradoxes inherent in the continuing bond paradigms. This timely anthology further equips therapists, educators, and even the grieving with diverse cultural and digital modes of expression applicable in our professional and personal lives."

Dr. Julie Beischel (www.juliebphd.com), a recognized world-leader in empirical consciousness research, received her PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology with a minor in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Arizona. She uses this interdisciplinary training to apply the scientific method to controversial topics. Following the suicide of her mother and an evidential mediumship reading, Dr. Beischel forfeited a potentially lucrative career in the pharmaceutical industry to pursue rigorous scientific consciousness research full-time. For over 17 years, Dr. Beischel has worked full-time studying mediums: individuals who report experiencing communication with the deceased and who regularly, reliably, and on-demand report the specific resulting messages to the living. Her studies began with testing the accuracy and specificity of the information reported by mediums during phone readings performed under controlled, more than double-blind, laboratory conditions that address alternative explanations for the source of their statements such as fraud, cueing, and overly general information. She has also examined mediums’ psychology, physiology, business practices, demographics, and experiences and published peer-reviewed journal articles and anthology chapters discussing these factors and the potential therapeutic application of mediumship readings during bereavement. Her research interests also include spontaneous, facilitated, assisted, and requested after-death communication experiences. Dr. Beischel is the author of the e-books Among Mediums, Meaningful Messages, and From the Mouths of Mediums and the paperback book Investigating Mediums in addition to numerous anthology chapters. Dr. Beischel is currently the co-founder and Director of Research at the Windbridge Research Center (www.windbridge.org), a 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to easing suffering around dying, death, and what comes next by performing rigorous scientific research and sharing the results and other customized content for free with practitioners, clinicians, scientists, and the general public. Her non-research-based interests include her husband, comic strips, stand-up comedy, and crafts of almost any type but mostly beads. She lives in Tucson, Arizona, with her research partner and husband Mark Boccuzzi and their two dogs.
Dr Callum E. Cooper is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, holding postgraduate degrees in psychology, social science research methods and education, from the University of Northampton, Sheffield Hallam University and Manchester Metropolitan University. He is based at the University of Northampton as an Associate Professor, where he lectures on Parapsychology, Thanatology, Positive Psychology and Human Sexual Behaviour.
He holds numerous grants and awards in parapsychology including the Eileen J. Garrett Scholarship (Parapsychology Foundation, 2009), the Alex Tanous Scholarship Award (Alex Tanous Foundation for Scientific Research, numerous, since 2011), the Gertrude R. Schmeidler Award (Parapsychological Association, 2014), and a 2018 nominee for the Ockham's Razor Award for Skeptical Activism (The Skeptic Magazine and QEDcon) among other awards.
He is member of organisations such as the Society for Psychical Research (and on its council), the Parapsychological Association, a Hope Studies Graduate Researcher (University of Alberta), and a member of the research group Exceptional Experiences and Consciousness Studies (EECS, University of Northampton).
Additionally, he has appeared on UK and USA radio and TV shows as a representative for parapsychology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern and Research-Based Perspective on Bereavement
This book is a wealth of information regarding how different cultures view death and dying. The book normalizes spiritual experiences of the bereaved, like visits from departed loved ones, and gives many examples of how people continue bonds with the departed. The book has many interesting details about a variety of cultures around the world and how the deceased are honored and engaged with. Taking a modern approach, the authors look at how technology and SM has been integrated into honoring the bereaved and keeping their memories alive. What struck me is how similar continuing bonds are around the world, regardless of our different religious beliefs or lack thereof. I found this book to be engaging and informative. I'm so glad that it validates, through research, many bereaved people's experiences. Many researchers still do not distinguish between trauma responses (like ruminating and replaying a distressing event that happened when the loved one was alive) from an after-death communication experience or purposeful engagement with the departed which often provide healing and comfort.
