About the author

'Charlie Peach's Pumpkins and other stories' – six more humorous tales to complement 'The Magnificent Moustache and other stories'. Reviews include: 'a triumph'; 'a masterpiece of how a short story should be written'. Adults love them too: 'I was suddenly 8 years-old again.'
Her new non-fiction book, 'Polished Arrows' will be published in May 2024, inspired by Isaiah 49:2. How God shapes us to be effective 'arrows' fired into our culture and context?
'Spiritual Feasting' (Instant Apostle, May 2020), based on Psalm 23:5, asks how we can ‘feast’ when life serves us dishes which are bittier and sour. Suitable for personal or group study. Reflective questions challenge and encourage readers towards authentic, mature faith. Also available as an e- & audio book (read by the author).

(I sneaked a quick read myself before wrapping it up & I was suddenly 8 years old again!)
Wonderful imaginative stories by Jenny Sanders & amazing illustrations by Amanda Young.
I was delighted to receive a Thankyou letter from the godson (& his mum!) who were enjoying this book as part of their family reading time. 😊
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 November 2023Ideal for reading out loud, the narrative voice in Charlie Peach’s Pumpkins and other stories reminds me of a really good English teacher, excited to share stories of the wonderful worlds she’s encountered that are Roald Dahlesque in their combination of playful nonsense and everyday normality.
The title story “Charlie Peach’s Pumpkins” is a perfect example of this combination. It’s a story about pumpkins. However, the combination of The Good Life themes in Little-Vernon-in-the-Marsh (which is a village exactly the way it sounds) and the introduction of colourfully named characters such as Mr McCavity the dentist, lead to a thoroughly entertaining story about, well, gardening.
Jenny’s writing feels so much at home with that most famous children’s storyteller that we almost expect to see Charlie Peach growing snozzcumbers. However, just like Roald Dahl’s books, the story isn’t really about gardening. Michelle Boot – the American intern who is a bit too “different” for Charlie’s initial liking but proves herself to make all the difference in his world – is the key character, teaching us about not judging others by first appearances and the extraordinary ramifications of simply showing kindness. Something that will resonate with and challenge us all.
And the stories don’t just provide moral lessons or counter-cultural solutions to problems our children might face (such as addressing bullying not with force but with compassion and cake), they also celebrate creativity. In one story, an old manor house gets turned into a fabulous water park.
Throughout, the narrative voice delights. Phrases such as “You may already know the peculiar history of the fascinating Kingdom of Slopingsideways…” make me long to curl up on an abandoned window seat and read for hours. If you love reading out loud to children, or you just love reading, I thoroughly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 December 2023Having very much enjoyed Jenny Sanders’ last collection of short stories (The Magnificent Moustache and Beyond), I was delighted when I discovered she had written another collection. Any book which contains a story entitled, “The Surprising Power of Cake” is a winner with me. The eponymous Charlie Peach lives in a community surrounded by successful fruit and vegetable growers. He dreams of cultivating melons, but this being England, his vision is doomed to fail. The poor chap can’t even manage common or garden crops and it is only when he reads a gardening magazine at the dentist’s that the idea of growing pumpkins occurs to him. It becomes a bit of an obsession, to the extent of finding out that they like country music which helps them to swell. The denouement of the story is curiously touching and there are plenty of laughs along the way, many gourd-related. The author is extremely adept at writing stories which can be enjoyed by children and adults alike, a rare skill indeed. This is a collection which all the family will enjoy and there is a thread running through it which elevates it to something very special. Highly recommended for all ages.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 November 2023This book has several short stories in that are perfect to read to children aged 7-10, with light-hearted tales that take me back to Enid Blyton stories. It is pitched well so can be read by children or read as a class book at the end of a busy day at school! The illustrations are fun and bring the stories to life.
