Life-changing opportunities pass us by every day – now we can train our minds to seize them
Self-help books like The Secret promise that we can tap into the 'law of attraction' to control our destiny, simply by changing our thoughts. If we strip away the mystique, at the heart of this idea is a fundamental truth that is backed up by the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience: most of the things we want from life – health, happiness, wealth, love - are governed by our ability to think, feel and act; in other words, by our brain.
Dr Tara Swart, a neuroscientist and executive coach with a background in psychiatry, is convinced beyond all doubt of our ability to alter how our brains work - and transform our lives. In The Source, she draws on the latest cognitive science and her experience coaching highly successful people to reveal the secret to mastering our minds.
With a four-step plan to awaken the power of your brain, this unique guide to life combines science and spirituality in a way that is open-minded and practical. Discover how to:
- Challenge 'autopilot' thinking and rewire your brain's pathways to fulfil your potential
- Manifest the things you want by directing your energy towards your deepest values and ambitions
- Harness the power of visualisation to prime your brain to grab opportunities and take control of your future
- Attack life with confidence, dispel fear and avoid negative thinking
Unlock your potential today – you are just four steps away from building a new confident you.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 March 2025Highly recommended. It’s a book you can pick up and put down easily. If you are feeling a bit stuck, lacking clarity, or uncertain of how to get life back into balance, then this little treasure could certainly help. Dr Tara references occasions in her own life and gives case studies to illustrate her points. There are some helpful meditations to try at the end of the book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 May 2019I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that they are not really in control of life. I seem to spend all my time just struggling to keep my head above water, trying hard to be a good parent, a good partner, and a good colleague but with the constant sense of guilt that I’m failing to be a good anything. There are all sorts of things I would like to improve in my life, but it’s hard enough to find the time and energy to fix the leaking tap in the kitchen, let alone deal with anything bigger. At various points in the past I have tried books that have promised to help “Change your life!”, but the new me has never lasted very long, and that has made me feel like things will never change.
But reading the Source, I see very clearly – and for the first time - why these changes have never stuck. That was itself something of a revelation. But more than that, for the first time in a long time I have a real sense that change is possible – or in fact, that change is actually happening.
While some of the ideas in the book are familiar – the power of positive thinking, the importance of visualisation – what is new, and for me, what was so helpful, is the way the book puts all of this on a solid scientific basis, and does so in a way that is clear, accessible, and personal. So where a book like The Secret explains the power of visualisation through the mysterious and mystical “Law of Attraction” (which never made much sense to me), The Source explains in fascinating detail how (for instance) visualisation can have a direct effect on the body (citing a study in which subjects who merely visualised doing finger exercises were found to have actually increased their finger strength); or how visualisation can help train the brain to pay attention to something useful that it might otherwise have filtered out.
The ‘Source’ of the title is what Swart calls our brain when it is functioning to its maximum potential. Achieving this potential is a question of paying attention to our habitual emotional responses and unconscious thought-processes; and where these are causing us problems, learning to reprogram our brain to give us the best chance of success. This, incidentally, is another aspect of the book which I prefer to the Secret. The book does not suggest you passively visualise a cheque and wait for the universe to send it to you, but rather that you work out what your goals are in life, and then prepare yourself to identify and respond to or indeed create opportunities in the best way you can.
As for the actual contents: the book is divided into four parts. The first three provide the scientific background to the practical exercises in the fourth: the first part looks at the science behind positive thinking and visualisation, the second discusses neuroplasticity – the ability of the brain to develop new neural pathways and develop new habits, and the third looks at the ‘agile brain’, and the importance of balancing different ways of thinking (e.g. logical, intuitive, creative, etc.). These chapters are packed full of really fascinating material, and are worth a read even if you have no interest in changing your life. But for they are also very important for those who can’t wait to start changing their life, so don’t be tempted to skip them: not just because they contain various important practical tips to keep your brain and body in good working order, and not just because they contain various preparatory exercises that you need to do before you start the exercises in Part 4, but also because they explain clearly *why* you will be doing the exercises you will be doing, how they will help retrain your brain, and what kind of progress you should expect to see. As I mentioned at the start of this review, this was revelatory stuff for me, and helped me to understand why my previous efforts to become more organised (for example) didn’t work.
I don’t write many Amazon reviews. In this instance, however, I have made the time to do so because the book has helped – and is helping me – a lot. I think one of the other reviews mentioned how reading the book had made them feel optimistic about the future – and that’s exactly how I feel, and I like to think that this book will do the same for others.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 July 2024Parts of the book were interesting but I’m sorry to say I found a lot of it boring. There’s obviously a lot of helpful information in the book but I struggled to keep reading it. I much prefer watching her in interviews/speaking where the information comes to life.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 December 2024I bought it as a gift for my son, who'd watched some YouTube videos with Tara, and he was very happy. He didn't know she had written a book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 March 2019In “The Source” Dr Swart takes the hocus pocus out of the law of attraction, breaks the idea of “magical thinking” and teaches you how to mould your neuroplastic brain into driving positive and goal-orientated life changes – all according to the latest neuroscience. If you’re put off by the “energy of the universe” tenet, this is the book for you because there’s nothing New Age-ey about scientific fact and common sense.
“Thinking for success” isn’t a new concept, but now Dr Swart explains the neuroscience behind the concepts followed by many highly successful and motivated people from sports starts to corporate leaders so anyone can change their thoughts and life outcomes. Whilst some may scoff at the “magic” of it all, with over 25 years of scientific and clinical experience Dr Swart knows what she’s talking about – and has walked her talk. As she writes, “We know that merely registering that something is possible in the brain can change what happens in the body of the outside world”.
Dr Swart provides simple exercises so you can analyse your existing thought patterns and behaviour and upgrade them to “attract” the outcomes you do want. And journaling means you can capture and crystalize your thoughts so you really know what you’re thinking – not what you think you’re thinking!
It’s an excellent book. Read about the science, learn how to reprogramme your neuroplastic brain for success and positive life outcomes, and try the concepts – just be sure to focus on what you really want because you can change your thinking and your life.
