This book took me through all the literary classics from ancient to modern times. The wording was comprehensive and mirrored each synopsis. What I enjoyed most were the foot notes provided after each synopsis. This is such a great gift idea for any English, Philosophy major or anyone whom wants to revisit the best literary pieces.

Despite its lofty title, this book is one of the most enjoyable and satisfying reference works I've ever read. Each section, from Classics to Contemporary, consists of a simple, one-page summary of a work of literature - everything from Herodotus to Harry Potter - with a sample quote and brief comment on the context and impact of the subject. The author has somehow managed to condense four millennia of literature into one useful and entertaining book. Beautiful wood-cut style illustrations make this the sort of book that belongs on a coffee table, not a shelf. Would be perfect for anyone wanting to be introduced to new literary experiences or those who want to go back and revisit some old friends. It's the ultimate TLDR. I loved it.

Like another title I reviewed, the copy of this book received by me from Amazon suffers from unacceptable print quality. Fifty one of the first two hundred pages of this four hundred and thirty two page book had lines without the first few words or the last few. I stopped counting the defective pages after page two hundred. The printer's poor work spoiled a book which is otherwise excellent.
