The reckoning is coming...
In an isolated house by Dugort pier a body is found. DS Lucy Golden is shocked to discover that the victim, Sandra Byrne, is a sister of one of her old school friends. To further complicate matters, Ben Lively, one of Lucy's colleagues, is the chief suspect. Lucy must put aside her bias in order to uncover the truth. But the deeper she digs into Sandra's life, the more the past starts to unravel and the less she seems to know. How do you solve a murder when all you have are lies?
As Lucy desperately tries to sort out what is true from what is not, Rob, her ex-husband and ex-con, makes a reappearance.
And when the reckoning for past mistakes finally arrives, nothing is what it seems.

About the author
Martina Murphy has been writing for as long as she can remember. Her first books were Enid Blyton rip-offs, where a group of children set out to solve mysteries. However, Martina was unable to solve the mysteries she had created. In a memorable book - The Mystery of the Disappearing People - there were no characters left by the end.
However, when she was fifteen, she wrote a book for teenagers - as she was a teenager. It later became 'Livewire' and went on to win a White Raven Award when it was published ten years later.
Having penned YA fiction - and garnered a Bisto Book Merit award, done a bit of journalism, written commercial fiction and been long-listed for an IMPAC Literary award, Martina turned back again to crime (the book kind). Thankfully, she has created two great detectives in DI Lucy Golden and DG Dan Brown, who seem to be able to get to the end of a murder case and find out all the answers.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 January 2024This series of books, set in Ireland and featuring Garda Lucy Golden, is definitely worth reading! The setting is lovely, set on Achille Island, the characterisation is believable and the plotting was complex but actually left me feeling a bit emotional towards the end. Not many books leave me feeling this way but this one certainly did with it's twists, suspense and an ending which left me hungry for the next episode in Lucy's life. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 September 2023Really enjoying this Lucy Golden series from Martina Murphy. Book 3, The Reckoning, is filled with memorable characters, each one of them distinctive and relatable, and so very well drawn. There is some fantastic dialogue that brings you right into the action, some scenes that pull at the heart strings, and a riveting plot that gallops along at just the right pace. The Reckoning would be a perfect script for a television drama.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 August 2023I bought this book because I liked the cover. I didn't realise it was the third in a series but it didnt matter, it was easy to catch up. Its brilliant. Set on Achill Island, a body is discovered in an isolated house. The detective, Lucy Golden, is in charge of the case along with William, the DI. It tells the story from Lucy's point of view mainly, so it's about the police investigation. It's tense, twisty, surprisingly moving and I'll be buying the first two books now!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 August 2023I bought this book when it came out as I loved the other two in the series. This one is another step up, I think. I could not guess at all who had murdered Sandra, a sister of Lucy's best friend at school.
Martina Murphy draws Lucy and her team so well, I feel I know them and as a result of these books, I visited achill island for the first time this year.
Roll on the next one.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 August 2023Lucy Golden gets better and better. With each book in this gripping series the reader is drawn in to a deftly spun web of half-truths and hidden betrayals. As Lucy Golden uncovers the truth behind the lies, so too the reader uncovers the hidden depths to her own remarkable character.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 September 2023This is my third book by this author and the third in this series. It is the best series of books on the guards in my opinion. Clever plot, well researched with believable characters and buckets of humour. Hoping there will be a book 4. Have passed it onto all my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thrilling Irish crime series
In "The Reckoning", book 3 in the thrilling Irish crime series by Martina Murphy, DS Lucy Golden and her colleague Dan Brown have another murder case to solve. The 39-year-old sister of Lucy's old schoolfriend, Sarah, is found dead in her mother's house. Lucy's colleague Ben Lively, who left the pub with Sarah the previous evening and seems to be the last person seeing her alive, is the chief suspect. Lucy doesn't believe in Ben's guilt, all the more so since Sarah didn't really have the best reputation, so she tries to uncover the secrets that surround Sarah and her family. And there seem to be many secrets!
At the same time Rob, Lucy's ex-husband and ex-con, reappears and makes Lucy's life even more complicated...
I absolutely loved the first two book in this series and so I was sure I would also love the this one. And I was right. 😊 An incredibly gripping plot with many surprising twists, well-developed and authentic characters, a beautiful setting and a nice dose of really good humour make "The Reckoning" a crime novel you just can't put down. There were also moments that moved me to tears.
After three books, all the characters have become friends to me since the focus is not only on the crime itself but also on the characters' private lives and their problems. I will miss them all dearly until book 4 comes out next year.
So in a nutshell, if you want to start a new crime series, make it this one. It's one of the best I've ever read. 😍
