Vikas Swarup's spectacular debut, which provided the inspiration for the award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, is a page-turning and beguiling story of love, perseverance, and drama.Vikas Swarup's remarkable debut novel opens in a jail cell in Mumbai, India, where Ram Mohammad Thomas is being held after correctly answering all twelve questions on India's biggest quiz show, Who Will Win a Billion? It is hard to believe that a poor orphan who has never read a newspaper or gone to school could win such a contest. But through a series of exhilarating tales Ram explains to his lawyer how episodes in his life gave him the answer to each question. Ram takes us on an amazing review of his own history—from the day he was found as a baby in the clothes donation box of a Delhi church to his employment by a faded Bollywood star to his adventure with a security-crazed Australian army colonel to his career as an overly creative tour guide at the Taj Mahal. Swarup's Q & A is a charming blend of high comedy, drama, and romance that reveals how we know what we know—not just about trivia, but about life itself. Cutting across humanity in all its squalor and glory, Vikas Swarup presents a kaleidoscopic vision of the struggle between good and evil—and what happens when one boy has no other choice in life but to survive.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thought-Provoking and Entertaining Read

The inspiration behind Slumdog Millionaire is a great work unto itself. Through its protagonist, we see several aspects of Indian society through the scope of various jobs and living situations that the character has held. This brilliant stroke makes the progression of job-to-job would work chronologically, but in service of the premise, Swarup brings up memories and stories from the protagonist on a case-by-case basis as he climbs up the ladder toward winning the top prize on a "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" version presented by Indian television. Thoroughly entertaining, harrowing, and captivating, I'm glad I purchased this to teach to my English class.

I am a huge fan of the movie Slumdog millionaire which is loosely based of q and a. I was afraid I might be disappointed since I heard that the book and movie differ greatly. Boy I'm so glad I took a chance and read this book because it's amazing! The book and film have the same basic plot, poor orphan boy goes on a game show and wins against all odds, but that's about where the similarities end. While i love the film, the book is so realistic with its heartache and at times it's sadness is overwhelming but the great storytelling is so addictive you can't put it down. Like the film everything comes full circle and every detail no matter how menial contributes to the full story. This is the best book I've read in a while. Whether you've seen Slumdog or not you need to read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite enjoyable

As a huge fan of the movie, I wanted to give this a try. It is a very good read, especially in that while related to the movie in overall theme, the specifics are quite different so you really re-engage as if you never saw the movie before and are reading this first. I can easily see it being disappointing if I had read the book first and then saw the movie, expecting it to cover the book more closely, when in fact it deviates quite a bit. I can also see myself reading this a few times and picking up different aspects of the story.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Q & A: A Novel by Vikas Swarup

Q & A : A Novel by Vikas Swarup is a well-written, warm-hearted story worthy of reading but disappointingly crafted into a mean spirited and needlesslly violent screenplay for its popular movie version, Slumdog Millionaire. I urge all those who have seen the movie to read Q & A to get the real flavor of the touching story of how a self-taught, street smart and yes, lucky kid from Indian slum manages to correctly answer all questions on a quiz show to win the top prize.
