Fr. Thompson shares the fruits of his solid scholarship pertaining the history of the brothers of the Dominican Order, in the background of which the reader may glimpse the history of the Order as a whole, interwoven throughout with inspiring stories about individual Dominican brothers from the past 800 years. I was especially moved by the examples of piety in the person of brother Pedro d'Achoa (+ 1616, p. 126-127); of courage and determination in the Mexican brother Marcos de Mena (+1584, p. 142-143), who walked over 700 miles back to his community in central Mexico after being shipwrecked near the mouth of the Mississippi river, during which trek he was taken for dead and buried alive by his companions, and besieged and riddled with arrows, yet later saved, by natives along the way; and of perseverance in the Quebecois Brother Hyacinthe (+1916, p. 188-189), who, despite a notably "irregular" formation and highly varied series of assignments throughout his life as a brother, nonetheless persevered in a life of self-giving to his community. It goes without saying that the markedly scholarly summary of the life of Saint Martin de Porres which Fr. Thompson provides is invaluable.
The final two chapters of the book provide an excellent synopsis of the shifting identity and apostolate of the Dominican brothers throughout the past 60 years in the wake of the Second Vatican Council. Fr. Thompson gives careful attention to the events pertinent to the lives of the brothers of the 60's, and especially of the 70's, the climate of which time period is apparent as the brothers reassessed and discerned their roles in the Order and the Church. Finally, Fr. Thompson gives voice to the "Brothers of the New Millenium" whose own analysis of their evolving role and vocation constitutes the book's final chapter.
