Gandhi and The London Cabby [Print Replica] Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

About the Book: “Stories have a mind of their own,” says Ashis, “as to where, when, and how they would appear in my travels.” Gandhi and the London Cabby, and the stories along the road, is a delightful ensemble of ten such stories, which fell into place, sometimes stealthily, once with a bang, during his travels. The people in the stories are as diverse as the locations and the settings. Whether it is the Mademoiselle in the fashion-metropolis of Paris, or the chai-walla in a remote Himalayan forest. The common thread among them, as we read along, is that these characters, they all jump out of the pages of the book, and move and talk in front of our eyes. And keep us guessing, how they would turn out, till the last line. Reading Gandhi and the London Cabby is like experiencing the actions and emotions, live. In Kashmir, or Jerusalem.

About the Author: Ashis Dutta is a software entrepreneur and a freelance writer on travel, music and culture. An avid traveller, he has been chronicling his travels through his writings and photography. For over two decades, his articles and photographs are being published in newspapers, travel and inflight magazines, in India, and occasionally in USA, Canada and Bangladesh. He evangelises sustainable and wildlife tourism through his writings and lectures. An amateur musician trained in Hindustani Classical genre, his musical expressions are vivid through his newspaper articles on different facets of music, from classical to folk. He has been writing and speaking emphatically on buskers—street musicians, and how the heritage of street music enriches our lives, and in the present state, need to be preserved with care and planning. Ashis lives in Bangalore, India, with his musician wife. His son and daughter-in-law, both scientists, live in Europe.

20 years of travel through ten moving stories!
The book through the stories captures the tumultuous times and at the same time it captures the fragility of human relationships and the way travel has an affect on you. Through this book one also learns of the many unknown cultures across the globe and of some cultures that exist in India as well. His stories also share of his own experiences which in 2024 can be something people usually don't talk about but it makes its appearance in one of the stories and really takes you by surprise. A travel book that really shows you variety of experiences of the author.

    About the Book:-
This book consists of ten short stories associated with nature, roadways jaunt and the events occurred during this span.
Stories like silent Garhwal (Garhwal is a place in Uttrakhand)
The run, Framed in time and others.
It's feels like author personal experience of journey and he wants to explore the moments in front of his readers.

    My viewpoint:-
All stories are interesting enough and reveal a unique happening bound in love, joy and solace. I liked "Framed in Times" and "Silent Garhwal" because they remind me some adorable moments. This book is kinda associated with everyone who once left running on road with ecstasy just to know the world.

I liked this book , covering the beautiful gist of life and gives positive feel while reading. This one is a short read so you can finish it in a couple of hours. Narrations and choice of words is also well. Cover is enticing enough but the title isn't so perfect as i think otherwise everything about the book is good.
So considering all these, you guys should also read this book. Go grab it.

Gandhi and the London cabby and the stories along the road by Ashis Dutta. The first story of author in a taxi offers so much to his readers. How in a foreign land discussing politics would mean and how the cabby claimed "Gandhi" was in his cab.

In the second one, what I like the most is the scenic beauty of the Himalayas and the way author narrates it. Magan Singh, the old man and the chai wallah's story is somehow intruging. Author's encounter Mauni baba , a saint is rare.

The third one is about Bethlehem and author's visit to the same. It is intriguing to know a little about history and Christianity in this chapter.
Then the stories further are even more splendid with author sharing his experience.
The story of something about Zafran will somehow make you quiet.
The ashrama that they talk about is so sernene and beautiful.

Author and his encounter with the rain is also a good story . That shows you importance of a lot of things.

Overall, a good book mixed with various emotions. One thing throughout the book i.e author's love for travelling is clearly visible. One can read this book while traveling.

    Recommended.

    Review :
The book is a collection of 10 short stories that the author gathers while traveling all around the world, while meeting different people.

I absolutely like each and every story. The writing style of the author is rich and captivating. Even though the stories are very short the author never fails to give vivid descriptions of the place he's in at the moment, the atmosphere as well as the glimpse of the characters. To think all the stories are from different time periods.

Just like the author is traveling from London to the Garhwal Mountains of the Himalayas, to Israel, to the Chota Nagpur Plateau, to Paris and some more beautiful places, telling us his captivating tales with some twists at the end.

This is an amazing reading experience as it makes me go visit all these places and meet new people and listen to them and make my own stories.

So would definitely recommend this delightful read.

This is a travel memoir kind of short story book. The travel presented in this book's story was vast and it spreads deeply from London, Paris to the Himalayas, etc. This book has ten short stories in it and each stories are small and also in average they are just fifteen to twenty pages maximum. This is just not a simple travel short story because each story will make the readers travel and also gives us the feel and vibe that we are also travelling and staying in that particular place. The narration of the book is one of the best in this book because more than being descriptive it also kind of made an emotional filled one with the easy and simple language.
