I'm quite surprised just how much my son loves these books. It's not action packed (which is one of the reasons I'm surprised he likes it!) but has a good story. My son loves the humour, characters and there's enough intrigue to keep his interest. My son enjoys trying to figure out what might happen next or what is causing the occurrences. If you've read the first two in the series I would recommend this book. Lovely book to read with your child. My son was 8 when we first started reading the Golden Acorn.

The Book of Dragon Lore which is referred to in the book is available free on kindle.

If the first book in the series hadn't been free on kindle I doubt I would have given it much consideration. But it was and now my son's well and truly hooked! Well done Catherine Cooper!

This is the third Jack Brenin book I have read and I have to say as the story develops and we learn more about the characters they just get better and better, I am an adult reader but really enjoy the antics of the group battling good against evil.

I love the way the main story continues but also, that there is a sub-story in each book making them exciting and full of suspense, it is also satisfying that the sub story has a conclusion (I won't spoil it for future readers but brill ending).
As before I just can't wait for the next one to come out and to find out what they all get up to next!

Thank you Catherine and keep on writing :O)

This story is of the same high standard as the others in the series. The characters all have distinct personalities, and their various dilemmas work out in the end. The particularly clever thing about each of these books is Ms Cooper's ability to show the value of many basic virtues without drawing attention to them, allowing them, instead, to be absorbed as part of the tale. The plot is continually developing, with no opportunity for the reader to get bored, indeed, when the end came, I wasn't ready for it, and wanted more!

Camelin's section at the back is extremely helpful, and his personal observations give it a certain originality over the usual list of dramatis personae.

"Silver Hill", like the other Jack Brenin tales, would be excellent 'read aloud' material, as well as providing a great opportunity for the reluctant reader to practise with clear, grammatical English and a captivating plot. My only reservation is that, like some other reviewers, I see a large number of proof-reading and editing errors have been allowed to remain uncorrected. I note Ms Cooper's comments that this is a matter which should be addressed to her publishers, but I would have thought that, as a former teacher, she might also wince at plurals with an apostrophe "Dragon's have always lived..." " the Druid's will never be woken now...", as well as at a significant lack of punctuation other than commas (and they're frequently missing from where they should be, as well as in situ where semi-colons etc should appear). Both she and her editor might also have spotted "small, bad-tempered little men" as tautology, and corrected it.

Don't get me wrong: the whole Jack Brenin series is wonderful, and is fun as well as educational at various levels, but those errors were not there in the earlier books, and I'm afraid I believe author and publisher both have a responsibility to their readers to make sure they produce quality work for those young - and not so young - readers to absorb.

My both children aged 8 and 10 are enjoying the series very much. They are on the different books ( as it continues in a sequence series) and it is nice to hear them talking about it. The golden Acorn - first book, was a hooking point to become a reader for my 10 years old dyslexic son. He never read that size book before this, and now he is on book no.5! Happy children - happy mum! Thank you Catherine Cooper for such a catching writing.

A great book. I loved this book. It was really focussed on dragons in this volume. Camelin’s slowly learning spells. I think he’s pretending he doesn’t know things. He must know a lot more of things. I liked Camelins diary near the end and how he said Catherine Cooper helped him. I just laughed and laughed. He really hates Timmery and the Dorysk. There were a lot more enemies with the tunnels. I never knew Velinder will pop up as well. I’m the same as Jack and I wonder where he’ll pop out later. I loved this book. Nothing bad to say really.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Reviewed in the United States on 18 March 2012
I love this series. When I tried the first book (it was free), I loved it, and then bought 2nd and this 3rd book. They kept me excited and never a dull moment! There is no romance. It has so much adventure and friendship! Lots of interesting characters too, both good and evil. If you love fiction and adventure and magic, this is for you. It is nicely written, I can picture what the author is describing, and what is happening.
Just one thing always bothering me is that these books end abruptly. It ends well but it ends with lots of questions still not answered. I guess this is the author's way of telling us there's more books coming on the way.

I know this series is written for children, but I love fantasy stories. I got the first book of the series as a free Kindle book. The promotion worked on me. I have purchased all of the books in the Jack Brenin series. For those of us who don't need sex to make a story enjoyable, this series is a fun, light, easy read.

Last year I read the first two books in this series. Even though they are written for children I enjoyed The Golden Acorn and Glassruhen Gate enough that I encouraged my sister to read them too. When I saw this latest book, Silver Hill I couldn't wait to see what was happening with Jack Brenin and his friends. I especially enjoy the adventures when they are raven boys. Not a long book but very enjoyable!

4.0 out of 5 stars When Nora's Away, the Ravens Will Play!
Reviewed in the United States on 2 December 2011
I loved the first two books in this series The Golden Acorn (The Adventures of Jack Brenin)and Glasruhen Gate (The Adventures of Jack Brenin), and waited impatiently for the 3rd book to be released. Fortunately, it did not disappoint! In fact, it made me want to stop reading, go back and re-read the first two books.

Nora's away in Annwyn, and Camelin is up to no good (surprise, surprise!). Jack is trying to juggle the demands of his 'real' life and still finding time to help Camelin and his other friends. In this book, we see Jack starting to grow up, live up to his potential, take charge, and make decisions (and stand by them). Camelin has determined to find Charkle's family, and one thing leads to another as only Camelin's mischief can.

This book returns all the same cast of characters, and we learn a bit more about them and their histories. Camelin has written a brief glossary of names and places which the author very graciously permitted him to append to the end of this story (along with some comments of his own). Quite honestly, I wish there had been a note to that effect at the beginning of the book, along with a link to the glossary of names, because there were times when I struggled to remember who was who or what had happened when.

Highly recommended for those who have read the first two books. If you haven't already read the first two books, they're highly recommended as well!

Note on Kindle formatting: Excellent. I did not notice any issues whatsoever.

Reviewed in the United States on 13 February 2012
Silve Hill is another fascinating sequel in the Golden Acorn series. It introduces
some new characters and magical things, like the Druid's dwindling doors. We meet the only remaining Dragonair plus a Draygull, known for their ability to be dragon sreechers. A previous villain, the former King of Annwn, shows up as the Big One. He was exacting his revenge on Annwn and the druids through the previously unknown fifth gate. We also discover the power of the Crystal Key, Caves of Eternal Rest
